The building housing Torquay Museum was purpose built for the museum in 1874. It contains around 350 000 artefacts dating from half a million years ago right up until the Victorian era. Some of these include: Britain’s oldest fossil, a mummy of a 4 year old boy that is 2500 years old, weapons and tools from all over the world, a sizeable collection of military objects and some of Agatha Christie’s’ personal effects.
There have been many reports of activity throughout the museum, which may be unsurprising considering many of the exhibits have age and use behind them.
A figure of a woman looking down and dressed in clothing from an older time period has been witnessed and photographed in the traditional Devon farmhouse room. A 300 year old crib has been seen rocking of its own accord. Books and leaflets have been known to fly off the shelves in the shop area, a woman dressed in a Victorian blue dress has been seen around the building and a figure reportedly walks through a bookcase in the library. Fingerprints have also inexplicably appeared inside a glass case containing a mummy, which hadn’t been opened in more than 8 years. The sounds of footsteps and banging are also frequently heard.
